The Rebel of Hungerford
September 1 7:30 PM
Show Style: Drama / Local History
Be forwarned, this is not an objective historical lesson!
Following the "Gananoque Affair" of February 22, over 80 arrests for treason were made in the Midland District. Nine of those arrested were deemed to have sufficient evidence against them to bring their charges to trial. Two rebel leaders, Samuel Lount and Peter Matthews, had already been hanged following Mackenzie's rebellion in York (Toronto). So the prognosis was not looking good for the defendants. Fortunately, they were able to secure the legal services of a freshly minted lawyer by the name of John A. MacDonald.
One of those arrested was a farmer by the name of Pierre Lesage. This story was recently re-discovered by Pierre's great-great-great grandson, Mark Lesage, in Betsy Boyce's book, “The Rebels of Hastings”. In the voice of Pierre, Mark (a fledgling actor and playwright from Tweed, Ontario) draws upon the facts of this story to create a picture of life in rural Upper Canada and to describe circumstances that led to such widespread discontent.
Pierre will recount experiences complete with all the sectarian and political prejudices of the age.
Pierre will recount experiences complete with all the sectarian and political prejudices of the age.
So, if you're ready to “get your Rebel on” join us at the Royal Theatre for this new, very Canadian play.

Searson Sisters
September 14 - 15 7:30 PM
Giving Canada's old time sounds a renewal into modern roots. Searson seamlessly blend spirited fiddling, energetic dancing, and modern harmonies.
Growing up in the Ottawa Valley, Ontario, Canada these sisters began to study music at a very young age, performing locally and competing at Step Dance & Fiddle Contests.
Since the age of 4, Erin has been classically trained through the Royal Conservatory of music in piano. Colleen has been studying violin and fiddle methods from all styles around the world since age 9 while both began step dance lessons before the age of 9. This prepared the sisters to grow and expand as they became accomplished performers and musicians and increasingly began to tour across borders and overseas.
A love of incorporating the Ottawa Valley style music with Celtic, East Coast, Scottish and various other styles can be heard throughout the live show.

Counting Aloud
August 23 - 25 7:30 PM
Interweaving some of Shakespeare’s reflections on life, "Counting Aloud" is the story of a passionate ‘woman of a certain age’ who takes up the piano for the first time with dreams of playing like a concert pianist. No stranger to dedication and discipline, having studied ballet, theatre, and yoga, Gabrielle’s innate determination and lifelong study habits serve her well in her quest to conquer the piano, but coming to terms with her own limitations is the unexpected and difficult pill to swallow.
Her touching musical journey, a metaphor for the lessons we all must face in life and love, is sprinkled liberally with humour for an entertaining and moving theatrical experience that every audience member will relate to through at least one aspect of their life.
Directed by Christopher Moore, written and performed by Gabrielle Soskin.
Presented by: Persephone Productions and King Street Productions.
